Buying a Slewing Ring? Consider These 5 Factors

Slewing RingSelecting the best slewing ring for your application takes more than knowing size and load capacity. Many factors will impact your bearing’s success and longevity — details that design engineers sometimes overlook.

To ensure the slewing ring you choose will operate most effectively and safely, consider these five factors:

1. Support structure. Don’t assume your support structure will distribute loads evenly. Many don’t. Overload can occur if a slewing ring is mounted on an irregular surface or on one that isn’t evenly supported.

2. Mounting bolts. Selecting the right number, size and type of mounting bolts is as important as selecting the right bearing. If bolts fail, the bearing could too. Ask your bearing manufacturer for bolt recommendations, but also check with fastener suppliers. They can help you determine expected bolt loads.

3. Bolt holes. The reliability of mounting bolts also depends on the location of bolt holes. Ensure they are evenly spaced, not just concentrated in maximum load areas. Fasteners that aren’t spaced evenly can disrupt load distribution in the bearing.

4. Mounting surface. A perfectly flat mounting surface, with no distortion or interfering bits of debris, is key to keeping bolts secure and bearings running smoothly.

5. Proper installation and maintenance. The best bearing won’t work well if it’s not installed appropriately. Installers should follow the manufacturer’s instructions precisely. Unpack slewing rings in a clean area. Keep the bearing horizontal. Rotate the slewing ring as bolts are tightened. After assembly, lubricate the gear.

Every bearing will need regular maintenance to help reduce wear and tear. That includes re-lubricating with proper grease as directed by the bearing manufacturer. Replace seals periodically to block debris and moisture that can cause damage and corrosion. Check bolt tensioning as well.

If performance, reliability and safety are important to you and your application (and when wouldn’t they be?), consider more than just basic specifications when selecting a slewing ring. The five factors above also contribute to a slewing ring’s long, productive life span.
